Sports
Medicine, also referred to as “primary care sports medicine”, is a medical
field that involves the non-operative musculoskeletal care of the athlete. In practice, sports medicine physicians work
with patients of all ages and activity levels, with the goal being to minimize
pain and to optimize physical function by non-operative means. On a given day, Dr. Graveley may see a 12
year-old baseball pitcher with shoulder pain, a 30 year-old marathon runner
with a chronic tendon injury, a 50 year-old construction worker with a back
injury, and a 70 year-old patient with knee pain from arthritis. Most patients with musculoskeletal pain do
not require surgery. However, when
surgery is necessary, Dr. Graveley works closely with orthopedic surgeons who
can perform that service.
